OFFICIAL Matters

Are you moving to Guyana? There are many bureaucratic issues expats need to know about and to deal with:

Guyanese permits & visas

You may need a visa and work permit, depending on:

  • Where you are from.

  • Why you want to stay in Guyana.

  • How long you want to stay in Guyana.

While visas apply to entry and transits, some internationals (or their family members) may require a residence/work permit. Learn more about the process and what else you might need.

To live and work in Guyana, you may require a TIN (Taxpayer Identification Number). This is a unique number that facilitates interaction with the Guyanese authorities and allows you to start a business. You will need this number to start a job, conduct business, open a bank account, handle tax matters, apply for benefits, etc. Find out more about who needs a TIN and how to find employment or start a business in Guyana.

Banking in Guyana

Guyana is a largely cash-based society. Applying for and opening a bank account locally may be different from your experiences in other countries. While all credit cards may not be accepted widely, there are other money transfer options to send and receive funds.

Getting around

Note that when it comes getting around, your foreign driving licence might not be enough. Read on to find out how internationals get around in Guyana.
