Like the other medical providers in the Guyanese healthcare system, there are both public and private dentists. Many private dentists usually work in their own single-dentist practice, although the trend is that practices are becoming larger with more than one dentist.

Most internationals seek treatment with private dentists since the level of care is higher, availability of services is wider and costs are relatively inexpensive when compared with dental care in more developed Western countries.

You may need a referral from your regular dentist for a specialist service that is not offered in their practice.

How do I pay?

Private dental services are not free. Expect to pay out of pocket for your dental care.

Can I use my insurance?

Local insurance plans may be accepted. Although you may have international health insurance coverage, it may not be recognized by most dentists so keep receipts for reimbursement afterwards. If you have a plan through a local employer, your visit to the dentist may be partially subsidized (although the amount depends on your insurance plan).
