DRIVER’S LICENSE

Foreigners need a Foreign Driver’s Permit along with their valid Driver’s License to operate a vehicle in Guyana.

This government agency is the only organization in Guyana responsible for issuing driving licenSes and conducting driving tests. Other responsibilities include supervising registrations such as licenSe plates and monitoring the technical condition of motor vehicles.

Foreigners with a Valid Foreign License

If you are planning to stay short-term in Guyana, it is often worth getting a Foreign Driver’s Permit (valid for 1 month) which costs G$2,000.  Foreign Driver’s Permits are issued on arrival at Cheddi Jagan International airport or at the License Revenue Office Headquarters in Georgetown or its regional offices.

Documentation needed for a Foreign Driver’s Permit:

  • Completed Application Form

  • Valid Foreign Driver’s License (original and copy). Official translations if not in English.

  • Valid copy of passport

  • 1- passport sized photograph 

Foreigners without a Valid Foreign License

Foreigners without a valid Foreign Driver’s License or planning a long-term stay need to apply for a Guyana Driver’s License following the Driver’s License Application process. 

Renewing a Guyanese driving license

A Guyanese driving license is valid for 5 years from the date of issue and should be renewed 3 months before it expires. You will not receive official notifications or reminders. All you need to do then is go to the License Office with the correct documentation.  Renewals cost GY$4,500. Payment can be made electronically.

Lost, damaged or stolen driving license

If your Guyanese driving license is lost, damaged or stolen then you must lodge a police declaration with the Guyana Police Force or get an affidavit from a Justice of the Peace before applying for a Duplicate License.
