Guyanese museums & MONuments

Interested in Guyanese art, culture, history or science? Most cultural institutions are concentrated in Georgetown. Here’s a list of some of the most interesting sites in Guyana visited by both internationals and locals.

MUSEUMS

Guyana National Museum
This is the largest museum. It is located in Georgetown and houses general collections of native artifacts, flora, fauna, precious stones and archeological finds.

Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology
Also in the capital, this is the first museum of anthropology in the English-speaking Caribbean. It contains artifacts of the country’s various indigenous cultures.

Castellani House
This majestic colonial building is located in Georgetown and houses the National Gallery of Art.

Guyanese Heritage Museum
Located in Kastev on the West Coast of Demerara, this museum houses a collection of 18th- and 19th-century Guyanese maps, coins, and a collection of books by Guyanese authors.

Rupununi Weavers Society Museum
Located near the town of Lethem on the Brazilian border; it displays textiles made by the indigenous Wapisiana and Macusí tribes.

WORLD HERITAGE SITE PROPOSALS

Although none have yet been approved, Guyana has entered the following sites in to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list for consideration. Most are nature-based and located outside of the capital city.

St. George’s Anglican Cathedral
Located in Georgetown, this cathedral is constructed in Gothic architectural style and touted as the largest wooden church in the world.

Kaiteur National Park
Home to Kaiteur Falls - the largest single-drop waterfall in the world.

Iwokrama Forest Reserve
One of the four main tropical rainforests in the world.
